Wright Morris

Model T in Shed, The Home Place, near Norfolk, Nebraska
1947

Gelatin silver print, printed 1981. 24.1 x 19.1 cm. Flush-mounted to original card, signed in pencil below the image on the mount. Editioned in pencil on a label affixed to the reverse of the mount. Print 20 from an edition of 50 (+ 5 A.P.). From the 'Wright Morris' portfolio, Witkin-Berley Ltd, Roslyn Heights/NY. - Matted.

The Ford (Model T) illustrated here plays a role in Morris' novel “The Home Place” from 1948 in which the writer and photographer describes a visit by the first-person narrator to Lone Tree in Nebraska during the Great Depression in the USA. In this most famous of his “Photo-Text” books, Morris gives equal weight to the written word and the self-composed, full-page image - unusual for that time.
