Bela Kolárová

Capí Nusky
1964

Vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver print. 20.5 x 28.5 cm. Signed and dated in pencil and photographer's stamp on the verso.

Her recognition that “the whole world has already been photographed” led the Czech photographer Bela Kolárová - married to the artist and poet Jirí Kolár from 1949 - to cameraless photography. Inspired by the photographic experiments of the “New Vision” of the interwar period, for a while she exclusively used the photogram technique, directing the rays of light onto the photographic paper with a sieve or through textiles, or creating “artistic negatives” by mounting the smallest everyday articles and objects between cellophane and exposing them. The structure of the grid which dominates the photogram offered for sale here, pushes the sheet nearer to the generative photography that established itself in Germany from the mid-1960s onwards.
