Senkyô. Ivory. Mid-19th century

Three men, clothed only in fundoshi, standing behind each other on an oval base. Finely carved and with some darkly accented details. Signed Shounsai Joryu.
Height 4 cm

The depicted men are a rare representation of Senkyô, a symbiotic motif, similar to that of the ashinaga-tenaga, in which the members of the tribe were able to carry each other thanks to long rods running through their bodies. Signed Shounsai Joryu.
