A softwood netsuke of a standing kirin. Possibly 19th century

Standing upright, with a human head, a high towering hairstyle, a long beard covering the whole torso, flaming joints and a long tail reaching up between the legs. Dark, lacquer-like patina in Shûzan style. Remains of a reddish finish.
Height 9.7 cm

In the auction catalogue of the Behrens Collection, Henri Joly describes the piece as a “Sôken kishô-type devil with a long tail”.
