An 18k gold Renaissance style pearl pendant

Designed as a resting ram, its body formed by a large baroque form pearl with fine lustre (c. 15 x 22.9 mm), the head hollow and naturalistically chased, the fur made from soldered gold threads. Suspended from a hand made wheat chain with an 8-shaped clasp. Minor damage to the pearl. Ram 24 x 37.8 cm. L necklace 68 cm. Total weight 30.70 g.
Elisabeth Treskow, Cologne, 1960s / 70s.

This extraordinary jewel was commissioned as a gift for the original owner, who was an Aries. The extraordinarily high-quality goldsmith's work is stylistically and formally inspired by Spanish pendants of the 16th century. Here too, the large, irregularly shaped pearl forms the centre of the composition. The goldsmith used it very skilfully to represent the ram's body with its woolly fur and the thigh of the hind leg. The naturalistically chased head with its hollow eye sockets and the relief of gold wire curls, on the other hand, is reminiscent of ancient goldsmith's work from the Mediterranean region. A reference to the client, who was an archaeologist.

Provenance

The pearl from the former collection of the archaeologist Dr. Horst-Ulbo Bauer, Cologne. Estate of Inca Bauer.
