A small bar cabinet by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann

Amaranth veneer on oak, ivory, chrome plated steel mountings. Two-door cabinet on four tapering supports. Stamped Ruhlmann in cursive under the front apron. H 104.2, W 64, D 39 cm.
Paris, Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann (1879 - 1933), c. 1925.

As Florence Camard describes in her great monograph on the artist, between 1913 and 1918, Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann used sketchbooks as a kind of "creative journal", and many of the ideas and designs made during this time were only realised in the course of the 1920s. Sketchbook no. 11 (using the numbering system of the Musée des Art Décoratifs) features this type of small, square cabinet with thin, tapering supports. The "Fuseaux cabinet" was already produced in 1917/1918 during WWI. Its design already features all of the elements used in the bar cabinet offered here.
