Salt glazed stoneware figure on a square plinth. Incised signature "J. CARTIER". Minor firing cracks. H 45 cm.
Jean Cartier (1924 - 1996), c. 1950.

Jean Cartier was born in 1924 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Canada. He received his initial education in Montréal. At the age of 21, he learned the basics of working with ceramics and then decided to study, which he completed in 1949. He then moved to Paris, but returned to Montréal in 1952, where he worked both as a teacher and as a freelance studio ceramicist and industrial designer.
