Godefridus Schalcken - Portrait of a Man in a Wig
Portrait of a Man in a Wig
Oil on copper. 13.2 x 10.9 cm (oval).
Monogrammed lower left: GS.
In addition to genre scenes, biblical and mythological subjects, the Dutch “fijnschilder” Godfried Schalcken also created numerous portraits during the course of his life in his various places of residence - Leiden, Amsterdam, London and The Hague. Particularly in his late work, he often painted small formats, such as the present portrait of a gentleman. In the narrowest of pictorial confines and in extreme close-up, Schalcken creates a portrait on this small copper panel that captivates through its intimacy and psychological intensity.
