Probably Flemish second half 15th century

A figure of Saint Roch, presumably Flemish, second half 15th century

Wooden figure carved in the round and partially freestanding. With extensive remains of partially overpainted older polychromy. A depiction of the saint, who was often invoked against the plague, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. He is shown lifting the hem of his robe slightly to reveal the wound on his right thigh.
With a vertical hairline crack and minor wear. The separately carved dog figure is presumably a later addition. Mounted on a wooden plinth. Height 83 cm (without plinth).

Provenance

West German private ownership.
