Abraham Teerlink

The Bridge and Church of San Francesco in Tirreni near Salerno

Oil on canvas (relined). 56.4 x 78 cm.
Signed lower right: A. Teerlink fecit.

In 1807, Abraham Teerlink was one of the three young Dutch painters who were awarded the "Prix de Rome". Upon receiving the prize, King Louis Napoleon became aware of the artist, and granted Teerlink a grant so that he could perfect his education in Paris and Rome. He settled in Rome for good in 1809 and never returned to the Netherlands. He did, however, regularly take part in exhibitions in his home country. He received great recognition there and was even knighted by King William I of the Netherlands in 1839 as a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion.
Teerlink's painting evokes the romantic conception of the Italian landscape in the tradition of artists such as Jakob Philipp Hackert or his compatriot Joseph August Knip, who also resided in Rome in the second decade of the 19th century but later returned to Holland.
