View of the Rubens Monument in Groenplaats Antwerp

Oil on panel. 85 x 130 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: P. Müller-Kaempff. 1915.

In 1913, Paul Müller-Kaempff travelled to the Canary Islands, surely the high point of his study trips, in connection with a lucrative commission from the Oldenburg-Portuguese shipping company for 24 large-format paintings. The shipping company had acquired the steamship “Teneriffa” that year and the native Oldenburg Müller-Kaempff was to paint views of the eponymous island for the ship's salons (cf. Konrad Mahlfeld: Else Müller-Kaempff / Paul Müller-Kaempff. Werkkatalog, vol. I, Ottersberg 2017, p. 175). One of these views was sold at Lempertz on 20 September 2019.
During the journey to the Canaries, the ship stopped at Cuxhaven and Antwerp, among others and Müller-Kaempff used these breaks to capture characteristic motifs such as “Old Love” (Cuxhaven), the “Rubens Monument” and “Steen” (Antwerp) in sketches which he would later use as models for several paintings. The present large-format view of Antwerp, dated 1915, shows the Groenplaats with the bronze statue of the Flemish baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens, created in 1840 after a design by Willem Geefs.
Dr Konrad Mahlfeld, whom we would like to thank for assisting in the cataloguing of this lot, will include the painting under number G 1315 in the third volume of his catalogue raisonné of the artist's works, currently in preparation.
