Carl Wuttke

The Great Wall of China

Oil on canvas. 106 x 211 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: C. Wuttke 1910.

Wuttke was initially taught to paint at the Berlin Academy (1871-1873). After this, he left Munich for further training under Angelo Quaglio. He then stayed for two years in Rome before returning to Germany, where he became a master student under Eugen Dücker in Düsseldorf. With his his exceptional artistic qualifications and longing for foreign and exotic motifs, he was drawn to travel to distant lands. Wuttke visited China during a trip around the world in 1897/99, later processing his impressions in various paintings. The present work is probably one of the largest and most impressive in this series. Wuttke here immortalizes this impressive architectural monument on an equally impressive canvas, with skilful brushstrokes, an effective colour palette and a masterly use of light. Only rarely did Wuttke paint such representative large format works.
