James Anderson

Roman Forum, View to the Capitol
1850 - 1852

Albumen print, printed c. 1855. 17.4 x 24.7 cm. Numbered '21' in the negative lower right. Annotated in an unknown hand in pencil on the verso.

These three images depict the Roman Forum from the opposite direction to the first lots (800 - 803). This angle also provides a panoramic view with the three columns of the Temple of Castor and Pollux on the left in the foreground, in the mid-ground are the ruins of the Temples of Saturn and Vespasian and the free-standing Column of Phocas, beside which on the right we see the mighty Arch of Septimus Severus that was unearthed in 1803. Above it rises the Senatorial Palace, built in the 12th century over the Tabularium. In Cuccioni's shot (lot 818), we see the trees that were replanted in 1855. In that of Bisson (lot 819), we can see the Portico of Dei Consentes, which was re-erected some years later in 1858, in the curve of the street leading up to the Capitoline Hill.
