Architect: Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud, Rotterdam

One of the internationally important protagonists of the new Dutch architecture, which was especially noticed by the German representatives of the International Style movement ('Neues Bauen'), is Jakobus Johannes Pieter Oud. In 1917 he co-founded the artists' movement 'De Stijl' together with Theo Van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian, and was an author for the magazine of the same name. When he became Municipal Housing Architect of the City of Rotterdam in 1918 he distanced himself from Van Doesburg and his radical aesthetic demands for a geometric-abstract formal language and he turned his attention to the requirements of social housing.
