Francis Rowland Yerbury

Siedlung Oud Mathenesse, Rotterdam
c. 1923

3 vintage gelatin silver prints. From 14.5 x 18.2 cm to 15.3 x 23 cm. Each print signed, dated and titled by J.J.P. Oud in ink on the verso.

Architect: Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud, Rotterdam

After the large settlement of Tusschendijken in Rotterdam (see lot 899), which consisted of standardized brick apartment blocks, Oud built the so-called 'White Village' (Hed Witte Dorp) in Oud Mathenesse not far from it. Even though the illustrations frequently published in contemporary literature suggest a more modernist concept by choosing a narrower image section, this was, as can be clearly seen in the photographs by Francis R. Yerbury, an architecture which, with its symmetrical arrangement and use of pitch roofs, definitely seeks a vicinity to traditional Dutch architecture.
