The landscape offered here is example of Christian Rohlfs's complete mastery of his medium, the water-based tempera he had just recently discovered for himself. The artist used a cleaning brush to repeatedly wash these densely pigmented paints off of the cloth-like and durable, handmade laid paper by scrubbing across them multiple times, resulting in luminously superimposed layers of colour. Here the landscape motif is additionally presented through a black contour laid in over the chromatic space like a lattice, thus generating an amazingly three-dimensional pictorial structure.
