A Hachmann mortar made for Johan van Herwer

Golden brown cast bronze with brown natural patina. The display side decorated with a coat-of-arms bearing a “house mark” supported by winged demi-figures. With two wide banderoles below the rim and above the base inscribed in Gothic minuscule and Latin capital letters: “johan van herwer styen syn huisfrow” and “ANNO DOMINI 1582”. With two angular faceted handles. Minor dents throughout. H 13.5, D 15.1 cm, weight c. 4.2 kg. Includes a corresponding iron pestle with a node. L 27 cm.
