Alongside the Flemish artist Geldorp Gortzius, Gottfried von Wedig was the most important portrait painter in his native city of Cologne in the early 17th century. The present work, depicting an anonymous gentleman, is among the earliest of around two dozen known portraits by the artist. It depicts the young man in the narrow frame typical of von Wedig's bust-length portraits, dressed in a black doublet with pink and grey iridescent slit sleeves. A large fly sits on the right of the sitter's starched millstone collar - a motif that also appears frequently in Wedig's still lifes.
