Guido von Maffei first studied law at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich before beginning his studies of painting at the “antique class” of the Munich Art Academy in 1865. His teachers there included Karl Theodor von Piloty and Otto Gebler, by whom we also offer a work in this auction. Von Maffei devoted himself almost exclusively to the depiction of wild animals, preferably in dynamic fight scenes such as the present large-format work.
