Limoges 13th century
A 13th century Limoges bronze crucifix
Engraved bronze and enamel. The raised figure of Christ crucified with four nails is applied to a cross decorated with blue and green enamel designs which are echoed in the material and decor of the figure's perizonium. The uniform series of drilled holes along the edges of the cross indicate that it may have once been decorated with gemstones.
Wear with losses to the enamel. Christ's head presumably replaced. Height 23 cm. Width 12.5 cm.
Former Dresse de Lebioles collection, Embourg (Belgium). - South German private collection.
