It was not until 1950, at the age of 58, that Adolf Fleischmann found his own individual form of painterly expression - since then, the artist's name has been inseparably linked with his homogenous and independent late work. Vertical and horizontal layers of lines supplemented by two-dimensional, angled forms are the building blocks he used to develop his purely abstract compositions. Fleischmann worked with displacement and concentration, and oval or rhomboid forms serve the layers of lines as a framework or a frame within the picture. However, these serial elements are not frozen in technical perfection; instead, carried out freehand, they allow us to recognise the handling of the paint. Slight irregularities in the paint's application and the lineation set these elements gently resonating. The reductive colour schemes that define the pictorial space are loosened up through occasional layers of contrasting lines.
“The picture plane is the resonance chamber of colour. The exact planimetrics of the pictorial ground structure the rhythm and direct the tonal clusters of the chromatic harmony. With Kandinsky, who always sought to present 'the selfsame forces as those possessed by music' in painting, it could be said that Fleischmann wished to enable us to experience the 'inner sound' of colour by entirely liberating - like Kandinsky and, after him, the Constructivists - his artistic means from any connection to external objects.” (Christina Weiß, in: Adolf Fleischmann. Retrospektive, exh. cat. Moderne Galerie des Saarland-Museums, Saarbrücken 1987, p. 15).
