Joan Miró used the title “Constellations” to group together a series of small-format gouaches which he created in Mont-roig del Camp and Palma in 1940 and 1941. The ensemble of these cosmic compositions - with their fantastic figurations, bodies and stars - are one of the artist's central complexes of works and decisively influenced the response to his work in Europe and America.
In early 1945 Miró's constellations were the first European pictures to be shown after the Second World War at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York, where they drew a great deal of attention. It is not surprising that Miró's all-over compositions featuring an extreme diversity of colours and forms as well as his occupation with variation and seriality had a major influence on the artists of the New York School, such as Jackson Pollock.
The suite “Constellations” presented here, which was published somewhat later, further underscores the serial character of this group of works through their combination. Together with its texts by André Breton, it is among the artist's most sought-after portfolio works.
