Untitled (Skizzenbuch 57/Ralf)
Sketchbook with 58 drawings: 51 pen and ink, 4 red chalk, and 3 pencil drawings on card, double-sided, in portrait and landscape format. 20 x 29.2 x 1 cm, 15 double pages with stitched binding. Signed, dated and inscribed 'Skizzenbuch 57 Ralf' verso. - Traces of studio and light traces of age.
This is the eldest known sketchbook from A. R. Penck in which he captures day-to-day life in his parental home in Dresden as the artist born Ralf Winkler. With assured drawing strokes, the 18-year-old depicts his mother, father and grandmother engaged in everyday activities. These are by no means simply artistic finger exercises; rather, the deep interest that the young artist takes in the people around him is revealed. And so, in a few lines quickly rendered on the paper, he accurately registers the essence of the person portrayed. At the same time, his examination of artistic greats such as Rembrandt and Picasso is clear in these early drawings.
