Signed to the underside in a slightly sunken reserve: Gyokusen
Seated on a round cushion, wearing an oversized eboshi. The monkey carved from stag antler, its eyes inlaid in light and dark horn. The eboshi and cushion of ivory.

Wearing a courtier's hat, the monkey illustrates the Japanese expression saru ni eboshi (A courtier's cap on a monkey).
