A small bronze model of a satyr with a goat

Figure of a young satyr with pointed ears and horns carrying a goat on his back standing on a column pedestal. H 18.3, with base 30.5 cm.
Italy/Veneto, 18th C.

This fine bronze depicts a mythological being that was part animal and part man. The rediscovery of Greek and Roman art and culture brought the dythyramb - hymns, poetry and dance in honour of the god Dionysus - back into the focus of artists and patrons. These figures include both child and adult satyrs as members of the retinue of Dionysus, the god of wine, joy, grapes, fertility, madness and ecstasy.
