Many items of furniture were imported from England to Dresden in the early 18th century, as evidenced by numerous surviving invoices. Thus, the most popular form of writing cabinet to be produced in Dresden was heavily influenced by English models. This piece, used for both storage and representative display, was only produced in Dresden in combination with a sloping drop leaf. The way the drawers at the front of the piece are divided and the shallow knee hole suggest that the cabinetmaker, although not English himself, was strongly influenced by imported works.
