A pair of Italian scagliola panels in the Etruscan taste

The outer part designed to resemble porphyry inlaid with scagliola panels. The centre part depicting charioteers within borders formed from bearded mascarons, laurel and vines. Designed to be used as table tops. Restored. H 4.7, W 130, D 70 cm.
Northern Italy / Piemont, around 1790.

Recreating rooms in the “Etruscan style“ was fashionable during this time period. It was a reflection of the increasing interest in Greek vase painting and other aspects of ancient civilisation.
