An Italian majolica plaque with Saint Jerome

Large rectangular plaque painted with a depictions of the saint with a rosary and a skull. Restored. H 31, W 19 cm.
Italy, Tuscany or Abruzzi, 1st half 18th C.

Traditionally, this plate is attributed to Bartolomeo Terchi (1691 - 1766) of San Quirico. However, similar majolica pictures were also produced in Castelli by members of the Grue family. A possible candidate for the authorship of this work is Aurelio Grue (1699 - after 1742), who learned from his father Carlo Antonio Grue in Castelli before moving to Atri, where he continued to paint in the Castelli style.
