A Meissen porcelain coffee pot with scenes after Angelika Kauffmann

Both sides painted with scenes of Telemaches returning to his mother Penelope and Andromache mourning by the urn with Hector's ashes. The shoulders with gilded ivy tendrils and a band of stylised foliage on pale purple ground. Blue crossed swords mark with star, a blue dash in the basal ring. Lid restored, localised wear to the gilding of the neck, a smooth glaze chip to the handle. H 15.6 cm.
Circa 1790.

Both copies of paintings on this pitcher are based on pictorial inventions by Angelika Kauffmann (1741 - 1807). The depiction from the life of Telemach, from Homer's "Odysseus", was probably painted after the engraving by William Wynne Ryland from 1777, "Telemachus redux a Penelope excipitur". For the execution on porcelain, the number of figures was reduced, thus increasing the dramatic effect of the scene. For the mourning Andromache from Homer's "Iliad", the manufactory painter used the engraving "Andromaqué Pleurant sur des Cendres d'Hector" by Jean Baptiste Lucien, published in 1786 - 94.
