A Meissen porcelain lidded cup and saucer with Abélard and Héloïse

The cup painted with a depiction of Petrus Abaelardus in despair, the saucer with Héloïse. Blue crossed swords mark with star and 4, sepia 28. Minimal chips to the finial. H of cup with lid 10.5, D of saucer 13.5 cm.
Circa / after 1776.

"These depictions of the two famous lovers were based on an English edition of their letters from 1776, which was illustrated with mezzotints by Thomas Watson after works in gouache or pastels by Daniel Gardner (1750 - 1805)."

The Hiemisch collection, acquired in 1980.
