Richard Howe (1726 - 1799), a distinguished and meritorious seaman of the British Crown, was promoted to Admiral in 1782 and raised to the peerage as Earl and Baron a few years later. The portrait is probably inspired by the depiction of him in the painting "Lord Howe on the Deck of the Queen Charlotte, 1st June 1794" by Mather Brown.
