View of Santa Maria in Aracoeli in Rome

Oil on canvas (relined). 66 x 58.5 cm.
Signed lower left: Twijck.

This veduta depicts the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, built in the second half of the 13th century, with the steep, characteristic Scalinata di Aracoeli leading up to its Romanesque brick facade. To the south of the church, a considerably less steep staircase leads to the Piazza del Campidoglio, which was redesigned by Michelangelo. The staircase can be seen in the shadowed foreground of this work and is flanked at the top by the monumental statues of the Dioscuri Castor and Pollux.<BR>The author of this work, Thomas Wijck, was a versatile artist active in Haarlem. He painted interior scenes with peasants, scholars and alchemists as well as views of Italian cities and harbours which he often populated with Bamboccianti scenes. Topographically exact works like the present composition are considerably rarer.
