Gustav von Haugk

On the way to Palermo at Monte Abbate

Oil on canvas (relined). 39 x 57.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Haugk Roma 1837.

Born in Leipzig, the painter Gustav von Haugk studied in Dresden under Christian Clausen Dahl. The teacher was himself formed by Caspar David Friedrich, the influence of which remained an all-important role model for Haugk. Friedrich's influence can even be felt in paintings Haugk made during his travels in Italy in the 1830s. This is the case in this atmospheric painting. Lonely in a wide landscape, a wayside shrine rises into the early morning sky, while two peasants with their mules are on their way to the market in Palermo.

Provenance

South German private collection.
