Christian Ernst Bernhard Morgenstern

Iscia in the Bay of Naples

Watercolour on paper. 14 x 27 cm.
Framed under glass.
Signed and dated lower right: Morgenstern 1865.

"Inscribed on the reverse: “Morgenstern, Ischia.”
Christian Ernst Bernhard Morgenstern settled in Munich in 1829. He was most impressed there by the works of Carl Rottmann. Although in his entry in the Thieme/Becker lexicon of artists, Paul F. Schmitt accuses the artist's late works of a certain tendency towards “theatricality and exaggeration”, this watercolour, painted just two years before the artist's death, simply expresses his spontaneous reaction to a beautiful view. Using only very few brushstrokes and a single colour, Morgenstern perfectly captures the essence of the southern atmosphere at the Bay of Naples, as attempted by countless artists before him."
