Capturing light and darkness, reducing the plane of the canvas to monochromatic lines and achieving rhythm that echoes past the canvas itself. Since the 1950s Günter Fruhtrunk has made a name for himself with the reduction of the painterly process to horizontal and diagonal compositions. Having been influenced by long stints in Paris, working with Hans Arp and Fernand Léger, his alternating colour fields soon became his calling card. Fruhtrunk often cited his interest in rhythm and cadence as an inspiration - or rather - impetus for his artistic and aesthetic language. Strong bold lines, often in black and white, alternate and are occasionally accentuated by subtle green or violet additions. Causing a strong push and pull effect to the viewers, the paintings draw you in and at the same time require the observer to take a step back and appreciate the varying widths of the colour fields. The aesthetic is reduced, the aspect of rhythm is never disruptive or purposedly fragmented. He manages to maintain the subtle balance between contrast and precision, creating an exhilarating visual experience.
