In May 1919 Serge Diaghilev - the famous editor, curator, theatrical and ballet impresario and founder of the “Ballets Russes” - commissioned Pablo Picasso to design the sets and costumes for Manuel de Falla's ballet “Le Tricorne”. In London, where the piece's premiere was also held in July 1919, Picasso created numerous drawings related to the costumes, stage decoration and motif for the curtain. The designs finally selected for realisation were reproduced for this portfolio work. The original drawings are to be found in the Picasso Museum in Paris.
