Leopard
2007

Soot on canvas. 140 x 190 cm. Framed. Signed, dated, titled, inscribed '"LEOPARD" (Sie) dokoupil 2007 dokoupil' and dimensions on canvas overlap.

The Czech-German artist Jirí Georg Dokoupil works in series, exploring one specific technique and expanding it, and then moving on to the next idea. He is most famous for his soap bubble paintings in which weightless circular shapes levitate over monochromatic backgrounds. Imbuing a sense of radical exploration he burns canvases, or experiments with elements of sooth and mother's milk. The postmodern artist displays a diverse and eclectic body of works, from more erotic pieces that border on Kitsch, to the paintings that are results from tyre marks. No style element runs through his oeuvre, other than that - the fact that everything from material, production style and motif is constantly reinvented, the actual brush almost never used. Dokoupil has his roots here in Cologne, having studied at the Fachhochschule for Art and Design and later at the Cooper Union in New York. He remained curious and ready to eradicate a previous dictum in favour of new visual explorations. Dokoupil lives and works between Plovdiv (Bulgaria), Madrid, Gran Canaria and Rio de Janeiro.
