Untitled (Bauhaus Dessau)
Vintage gelatin silver print. 23.7 x 17.7 cm. Numbered in an unknown hand in pencil on the verso. - Matted.
The photograph shows T. Lux Feininger, the photographic autodidact and the most important documentarian of student life at the Bauhaus. Facing the viewer in a humorous pose with a top hat and banjo, the shot expresses the prevailing exuberant atmosphere at the musically charged gatherings of Bauhaus students on the roof of the Bauhaus building. The cut, the strong view from below, the shadowing of the face caused by the top hat pulled down over the face, and the blurring of the movement of the hand playing music - all these typical elements of the photography of the “Neuen Sehens” - underline the nature of the portrait, characterised by dynamism and liveliness.
