A rare Berlin KPM porcelain plate from the Japanese dinner service

Model no. 633. Painted with a depiction of four Chinoiserie figures making music in an exotic landscape. Blue sceptre mark, impressed marks K and 3, incised II. A small restored chip to the rim at 7 o'clock, minor wear and scratches to the gilding. D 31 cm.
1769.

The king ordered this service, known as the "Japanese Service for Frederick the Great", from KPM on 14th July 1769, only a few years after he had already received a service with the same designation from the Meissen manufactory. The décor, however, was markedly different: Unlike the earlier service of 1762, the new one was to be decorated not with fanciful animal motifs but with large Chinoiserie figures that matched the interior of the Chinese House in Sanssouci Palace Park.

Provenance
