A Meissen porcelain cup and saucer with mythological scenes

With original lid and saucer. The cup decorated with a scene of "Ariadne on Naxos", the saucer with a recumbent figure and Cupid in a landscape. Blue crossed swords mark with star, 26 in purple (saucer), 28 in black (cup, possibly later). Wear to the gilding in some areas, a restored chip to the lower rim of the saucer. Crack to the centre of the saucer.
Around 1790.

The scene on the cup is based on Angelika Kauffmann's painting "The abandoned Ariadne", which was published in an engraving in 1778 by the brothers Georg Siegmund and Johann Gottlieb Facius under the title "Ariadne awakened from Sleep, finds herself abandoned by Theseus". The saucer shows a scene of a recumbent young woman (presumably Venus) and a winged youth (perhaps Cupid) in a landscape.

Provenance

The Dr. Annedore Müller-Hofstede Collection.
