A Berlin KPM porcelain cup with a portrait of Joachim Winckelmann

With original saucer. Painted with a portrait of the famous archaeologist in a cap and dressing gown against a coloured ground imitating a stone relief. The saucer with a ram in a landscape inscribed "Zum 9ten Juny 1803." Blue sceptre mark with blue enamel dash, pressnummers 7 and 32, the saucer incised II, the cup IIII. H cup 6, D saucer 13.1 cm.
1803.

In 1803, Johann Joachim Winckelmann had already been dead for 35 years. The cup may have been a gift to one of his pupils or admirers.
