A Meissen porcelain cup and saucer with scenes after Angelika Kauffmann

The cup painted with the scene of Ariadne on Naxos, the saucer with Paris and Aphrodite, both in sepia camaieu with coloured accents. The lid associated but matching and painted with a quiver of arrows amid clouds. Blue crossed swords mark with star and 4, cup with sepia 12, saucer marked 28. and impressed 1. Handles restored, chips to the ribbons on the lid. H with lid 10.5, D of saucer 13.5 m.
Circa 1780 – 1790.

"The motif on this cup is based on Angelika Kauffmann's spectacular painting “Ariadne Abandoned by Theseus”, published in 1778 by the brothers Georg Siegmund and Johann Gottlieb Facius under the title ""Ariadne awakened from Sleep, finds herself abandoned by Theseus"". The depiction on the saucer shows an excerpt from the judgement of Paris, namely the dialogue between Paris and Aphrodite without the other contestants Hera and Athena, from William Wynne Ryland's ""Porrigit hic Veneri lucida dona Paris"". "
