An Islamic mortar with lion's head handles

Engraved cast bronze with silver inlays, brown patina with remnants of red pigment and minor verdigris. Of slightly tapering form with silver coated lion's head handles, a calligraphic inscription and tendril borders. With a repaired breakage to one of the mascarons, some minor dents to the edges. H 14.6, D 16.6 cm, includes pestle, weight with pestle c. 7.2 kg.
Attributed to Iran, 13th - 17th C., the lion's head mascarons later (17th C. or after).
