A rare and magnificent Amsterdam Baroque mortar

Thickly cast golden brown bronze with silvery-gold patina. Tapering mortar with a moulded base. Decorated with two bands of ornament depicting putti making music amid arabesques and an acanthus frieze. With a wide banderole below the rim inscribed with the caster's name and the date in Latin capital letters: "CLAES NOORDEN ET IAN ALBERT DE GRAVE ME FECERUNT AMSTELODAME A° 1708". Minor dents to the rim. H 22.8, D 29.5 cm, weight c. 29 kg.
