A rare Gothic two-handled mortar made for Willem Lurkeman
Golden brown cast bronze with shimmering brown patina. Tapering mortar on a thick base. Decorated with bands of moulding and engraved below the rim in Latin capital letters with the foundry mark, patron and date: "WILLEM LVURKEMAN A 1436". With two faceted handles. The inner rim slightly unevenly cast in areas, minor vertical cracks to the outer walls (one repaired and patinated). H 15.7, D 17 cm, weight c. 6 kg.
Attributed to Central or Northern Germany, 1436.
