A rare Swiss mortar made for Stabhalter Michael Fux

Heavy, golden brown cast bronze with shimmering silvery patina. Squat, tapering mortar with slightly flared rim. With a banderole above the base inscribed in Latin capital letters: "HER MICHAEL FVX STABHALTER 1649". Decorated with (severely worn) mascarons, grapes, acanthus foliage and small shields interspersed with the letters "H V R G". With twisted baluster form handles. Dents to the edges, some localised wear and scratches, the interior with some sediment deposits and verdigris. H 12.4, D 18 cm, weight c. 4.3 kg.
