A Meissen porcelain model of a game bird

The finely painted naturalistic plumage picked out in brown and ochre tones, the earth mound base with green reeds and gilt rocailles. Ground-down, unglazed underside, unmarked underside with a hole. Restored chips to the reed and beak, one claw broken off, two others restored. H 21.5 cm.
Mid-18th C., model by Johann Joachim Kaendler.

A pair of these rare bird models in: Albiker (Die Meissner Porzellantiere im 18. Jahrhundert, Berlin 1959, no. 139), possibly the originator of the erroneous nomenclature.
