Portrait of a Philosopher

This impressive image shows a middle aged man engrossed debate and presumably depicts a philosopher. It is not clear which apostle the work intends to portray, as it lacks any identifying attributes. What is clear is that the artist was well-acquainted with the works of Caravaggio and was able to draw on both his repertoire of robust, primarily rustic characters and his dramatic use of light.
