Marten Ryckaert

Pastoral River Landscape

Oil on copper. 20 x 28 cm.

After Marten Rijckaert returned from Italy, he enrolled at the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp in 1611. In Italy he had sketched outdoors from about 1605 to 1610. Works from this period and later bear witness to the influence of Paul Bril, whose prints of Roman-style landscapes were widely circulated in Antwerp at the time. In the present painting, the influence of the works of the older Jan Brueghel is particularly noticeable in terms of the style and grouping of figures in the landscape.
