The Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John in a Landscape

Oil on copper panel. 32 x 40.5 cm.

The landscape backdrop of the present work may have been painted by Jan Brueghel II, while the figures are probably by Pieter van Avont. Jan Brueghel II and Pieter van Avont worked together quite frequently, with Van Avont usually executing the figures for Brueghel's landscapes and Brueghel painting the landscape backgrounds for Van Avont's figural scenes. The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna houses two such collaborative works by the artists.
